15 year old Jordan Picardo has been accepted as a student by the English National Ballet School after a rigid audition process.

This is an exceptional achievement for Gibraltar as this one of the most prestigious ballet schools in the world demanding an excellent high standard even at the audition stage. Jordan who dances with the Gibraltar Academy of Dance will become a full time student as from September and engage in a three year Diploma in Professional Dance (classical ballet).

The English National Ballet School is recognised as the peer of the major ballet schools in France, the United States, Denmark and the UK. Founded in 1988 by the English National Ballet to provide talented young dancers with the highest quality of training, it exists as a separate entity although it maintains strong links with its parent company, sharing its commitment to quality, cultural diversity and accessibility.

For the past five years Jordan Picardo has trained with Paulette Finlayson, director of the Gibraltar Academy of Dance, to obtain the level required to become a full time ballet student. Last year he passed his Vocational Intermediate (R.A.D.) with distinction which was pivotal to him being accepted following a demanding audition process. It was on the strength of a DVD filmed locally and structured by his teacher that he was called upon to audition in the final round therefore bypassing the preliminary stage. There were only 23 dancers in the final audition of his age. Over 300 dancers had originally applied from all over the world. Jordan Picardo has taken the lead in a number of local works presented by the Gibraltar Academy of Dance including the Rite of Spring, Les Sylphides, and Masterpieces.

The English National Ballet School has trained countless dancers who now work in major ballet companies around the world. For the past 10 years, the School has been officially designated ‘Outstanding’ by the UK Schools Inspectorate (OFSTED) and usually achieves a 100% employment rate for its graduates. This year 45% of the dancers at English National Ballet received their training in the school.
