He was all of 6 years old at the time, but Kylend Hetherington was seized with a burning conviction. After watching the film “Billy Elliot,” about an 11-year-old aspiring ballet dancer in a small northern England town, the youngster was furious.

“I said to my mom, and I was so mad, ‘Why did they have to make that movie now? I’m supposed to do this. I could do it better than that boy,’ “ recalls Kylend.

He may have missed that chance, but the role is now his, only this time, he’s playing it onstage — in the national tour of the smash musical adaptation.
