“The moms are the best part,” said 17-year-old Alexander Maryianowski, who continues his reign as Abilene’s go-to Nutcracker Prince. “It’s like having 50 moms. ‘Can I get you some food? Do you need anything?’ It’s great.”

The moms are especially pampering of Alexander, and with good reason. He has, in a very short time, become the leading light in Abilene’s ballet community. The son of two dancers, he has an inherited grace that’s apparent even when he’s offstage. But his work ethic has carried his craft even further, and now Alexander is on the verge of joining up with the prestigious Houston Ballet in January.

And…. This year, Alexander has more male castmates than ever thanks to some creative recruiting. To fill out the party scene near the beginning of the show, parent Earlene Martinez brought in 10 local tae kwon do students to dance. Several of them are black belts.
