Kevin Burke used to get dragged along to his older sister’s ballet classes. Instead of sitting in the corner, he started mimicking their moves until the teacher said if he was going to be practicing then they needed to be paying. His mom said if she was paying he’d better be dancing. Burke said, “There’s no way I’m taking ballet.” He began taking tap lessons instead, and after three years developed some hip problems. The same teacher recommended he take ballet to help with his hips. “I think it was just so she could have a boy in her class,” he said.

Burke loved the athleticism and grace of his new love, ballet as well as modern dance. “Of course, you get to be around girls, which helped,” he said. But he didn’t expect to love it.
