A gifted young dancer from Otley is celebrating being chosen for a top training programme. Jan Filby will begin dancing with The Northern Ballet Academy, under its Centre for Advanced Training scheme, in September.

The nine year old, who has learned his craft at the Newall School of Dancing, in Otley, had to complete a rigorous, four-day audition to earn his place.

Newall School of Dancing Principal Carol Newbould said: “I’m delighted Jan has been chosen. When he came to the very first lesson here, about two years ago, I just knew he would be great, he just loves to dance.

“I’d taken him to an open day at the Northern Ballet and he really liked it, so we sent him for the audition which was four tough days, at Easter, and he’s done really well to be chosen.”

The Centre for Advanced Training programme is an intensive scheme aimed at helping children with “exceptional potential” to prepare for a career in dance.
