Staten Island Ballet founding director Ellen Tharp doesn’t waste words. “Boys are gold,” she said last week. A hint of a sigh. “No, not gold, platinum.”

This summer, the SIB school’s international summer intensive, an all-day, three-week nearly adult-sized course of study, included one male student, a 14-year-old Parisian named Valentin Rosso.

A big deal? The biggest. Boys remain rare in the ballet world, outnumbered by girls 10 to 1 or better much of the time.
