[West Yorkshire, England] – The dreams of two ballet boys have come true after they beat 160 other hopefuls to be chosen to appear in a opera house production. Rowan Lightfoot and Troy Tipple have both been selected to appear in a production of ballet Coppelia at the Grand Opera House in York.
Eight-year-old Rowan, from Tingley, who is a member of the Kay Academy of Dance, and nine-year-old Troy, from Morley, who dances at the Deborah Coultish School of Dance and goes to Morley Victoria Primary, will appear in three performances from June 7 with the English Youth Ballet (EYB) playing the roles of Betrothal Dancers.
Rowan, a pupil at Westerton Primary School, said: “The training is hard work but lots of fun. It’s been good to meet other boy dancers as there aren’t many in my ballet school and I’m enjoying seeing everything coming together and am looking forward to putting on my toy soldier costume for the final performances.”
Rowan’s mum, Lauren, said: “We were really excited when his dance teacher suggested he go along to an audition and were extremely proud when he was offered a role as there were over 100 children in his age group auditioning for parts.
“Training is very intense – 12 six hour blocks over weekends and then three performances in June .”
Equally excited Troy said: “I was very hopeful at the audition but the other dancers were awesome, I couldn’t believe it when I got chosen it was fantastic. I am having the most brilliant time. Richard Reed teaches us some of the dances. I would love to dance as well as him some day.”
Troy’s mum Jane said: “We are so very proud of him , he has only been taking ballet lessons for 18 months but really enjoys them, We cant wait to see the performance, we are all looking forward to it so much, Troy is amazing.”
