[Portland, Oregon, USA] – Several years ago, Liz Jurica did something many would consider an impossible feat: She persuaded her two sons, then in elementary school, to attend a ballroom dancing class near their Beaverton home.

“Try it, you might like it,” she told Michael, a fifth-grader, and Nick, then in third grade. “If you hate it, we don’t have to come back.”

About an hour later, the boys emerged from the class, beaming. They loved it. Over the next several years, ballroom dancing led to ballet – Michael Jurica, now 18, attends the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where he studies ballet, and Nick, 16, will perform in The Portland Ballet’s production of “The Enchanted Toyshop” with his younger sisters, Sarah, 13, and Mary, 11, on Thanksgiving weekend.
